As I Am Church Fast Guidelines

As I Am Fast (Jan. 2-5) is a 3-day, Spirit-led endeavor which should be approached with prayer and discipline.

This Fast is a slight modification of the popular “Daniel Fast” based upon the Biblical model found in Daniel 1.

GENERAL GUIDELINES OF THE AS I AM FAST ARE AS FOLLOWS

No Red Meat or Processed Meats:

Only broiled fish or poultry is allowed once a day; eggs or egg substitutes are allowed throughout the day.

Limited to No Carbohydrates:

Use only whole-grain products such as whole wheat, brown rice, millet, quinoa, oats, plain oatmeal, barley, grits (no butter or sugar), whole wheat pasta, whole wheat tortillas, rice cakes; use only fresh fruits and vegetables.

No Sodas, Caffeinated Drinks, or Alcoholic Beverages:

Water, herbal (caffeine-free) tea, unsweetened soy or almond milk, 100% fruit/vegetable juice (no sugar added) are allowed.

No Sugar or Artificial Sweeteners:

Use only a limited amount of raw honey.

No Dairy Products:

Milk, yogurt, cheese, cream, butter, or margarine are not allowed.

No Social Media:

[i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik-Tok, etc.] IF NEEDED, limit social media to one hour per day for news updates, work, or emergency communication.

Fasting Tip:

When you get hungry (and you certainly will), that is your signal to pray for strength. You can also listen to the As I Am Song Playlist on Spotify and meditate.

PRAYER

Begin each day with morning prayer and scripture reading at 6 a.m. for a minimum of 15 minutes.

  • Day 1 Focus: Matthew 19:26 (Dream/Think BIG, all things are possible with God).
  • Day 2 Focus: Joshua 1:9 (Be strong, bold, courageous, not afraid).
  • Day 3 Focus: Ephesians 3:20 (God can do more than you ask or think).

EXAMPLE FOOD MENU

BREAKFAST:

  • Boiled egg
  • Fresh fruit – – blueberries, strawberries, bananas, peaches, apples, oranges, watermelon, etc.)
  • Pecans (unsalted)
  • Grits/oatmeal (no butter or salt)
  • Green tea with raw honey.

LUNCH:

  • Boiled egg
  • Fruit bowl (any fresh fruit).
  • Nuts (Almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts)
  • Water, unsweet herbal tea

SNACK:

  • Rice cakes with all-natural almond butter (no sugar)
  • Celery with almond butter
  • Fruit
  • Water

DINNER:

  • Grilled/baked/broiled chicken, fish, or shrimp.
  • Brown rice
  • Green beans
  • Whole Wheat rolls
  • Crystal light, Water, tea with raw honey.

FAST FOOD/ON THE GO:

  • Chipotle Vegan bowl (brown rice, black beans, pico, green peppers, guacamole). No chips.
  • Chipotle Bowl (brown rice, chicken, green peppers, guacamole, pico). No chips.

REMEMBER: You can eat eggs, fresh fruit, and unsalted nuts all day.
